Membership Application
Ahoy Applicant!
Eastern Power Boat Club, established in 1905, is one of America's oldest boat clubs, with a proud heritage and history within Washington DC's boating community. We are a private social club, not just a marina.
The important distinction is that we are a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster the boating community and promote the good of the club, not to make money. We are a membership-owned, self-managed organization who all chip in for the good of the club. Our members are expected to lend their services, skills, and labor to the club and to be part of a community, not just a place to store a boat. As such, we consider new membership very carefully to make sure that new members are a good fit and will advance the collective good of the club.
Our Application Process
- First, be sure to talk to someone at EPBC to confirm we're accepting applications. No point in going through the process if we don't have space available for you.
- Fill out this form completely and submit it along with the application fee (the fee is fully refundable if you are not accepted into the membership for any reason).
- Once we accept your membership application, we will invite you to a monthly membership meeting. You'll be asked to introduce yourself, and the members may ask you to expand on information within this application. You're free to ask us questions as well! We really would like to get to know you, so the more of a dialogue we can have, the better it is for everyone.
- After that initial read-in, our membership committee will check references, do their due diligence, and may ask you additional questions. At a minimum, you'll need to provide sufficient documentation on your vessel and submit it for inspection by our Measurer (the person responsible for making sure we only accept seaworthy boats that meet our minimum requirements).
- At the following monthly meeting, members will be given a chance to ask any additional questions, followed by a membership vote. You should be present at the meeting, but you will be excused during the actual vote.
Things We Look for in a New Member
- Someone who has a working, well-maintained boat that is in good condition and compatible with available slips
- Someone who has the experience, capacity, and resources to keep their vessel in good working order
- Someone who wants to be part of a social community and not just a slip holder
- Someone who can contribute to the club beyond paying their dues, be that work time (at least 3 hours of which is required each month), special trades or skills, or other contributions valuable to the club
- Someone we can all get along with and enjoy being around
